Standard For Wireless TV Sets Hung Up

The biggest drawbacks of those hang-on-the-wall big-screen TV sets may be the unsightly cords hanging down from them leading to cable and settop boxes and electrical outlets. Those dangling wires have generated so many complaints that a new study indicates that sales of wireless TVs will rise from fewer than 100,000 this year to about 1 million four years from now. The report by ABI Research observed that wireless TV sales are currently stalled by incompatible technologies. However, an industry standard is expected to emerge during the next two to three years, ABI analyst Steve Wilson said in the report.

Production issues to delay Coldplay tour

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Coldplay has been forced to postpone the start of its North American tour by two weeks because of unspecified "production delays which mean that the show simply won't be ready" for its planned June 29 kickoff in Philadelphia.

The itinerary will now begin with a July 14-15 stand in Los Angeles; it was to close August 4 in Chicago but will instead wrap that day in Boston. Tickets for the scrapped dates will be valid for the new ones, but refunds are also available at points of purchase. An updated itinerary is posted on the band's Web site (http://www.coldplay.com).

Coldplay's previously announced free shows in London (June 16), Barcelona (June 17) and New York (June 23) will go on as planned, as will a July 27 show at the first Pemberton Festival in British Columbia.

After the conclusion of the first North American leg, the group will tour international markets through early October, after which it begins another round of North American dates. In 2009, Coldplay will play European stadiums and might play such venues in North America as well -- "if we can do the business," manager Dave Holmes told Billboard.

The band's fourth album, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," will be released June 16 internationally via Parlophone/EMI and a day later in North America via Capitol. First single "Viva La Vida" last week became the biggest hit of Coldplay's career by jumping from No. 10 to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Atom Egoyan's next is 'Seven Wonders'

The film will continue director's interest in technology

NEW YORK -- Atom Egoyan has set his next project as a writer-director: "Seven Wonders," a love triangle that blends reality and fantasy.

The project centers on a woman named Pandora who, after her own relationship goes south, becomes consumed by a relationship between a commercials director and the director's boyfriend, even following the helmer as she shoots commercials at the Seven Wonders of the World.

"It's an intimate story that I think can be harnessed on a larger canvas," Egoyan said. "The Seven Wonders are an escape from our lives, places where we can believe in something larger."

Continuing Egoyan's recent interest in technology -- a topic that figures in his recent Festival de Cannes premiere "Adoration" -- the two women of "Wonders" meet online, leading to ambiguity over whether some of the interactions might be taking place only in Pandora's imagination.

Egoyan said he's piqued by modern technology because of the idea "that it's so easy to be in contact (that) relationships can get complicated and confused."

The director will produce "Wonders" through his Toronto-based shingle Ego Film Arts.

The project had been set up at Universal, but it's likely that it will move forward under an indie model. Canadian production banner the Film Farm, which produced "Adoration," could come aboard to produce "Wonders."

With its exotic locations, the budget is likely to be higher than it would be for a traditional Egoyan film. Several financing options are said to be under consideration.

"Adoration," slated for release by Sony Pictures Classics, looks at a shattered family, modern communication and an act of international terrorism that might not have happened. A release date has not yet been set by SPC.

In addition to "Wonders," Egoyan -- who was nominated for an Oscar for best director and best adapted screenplay for "The Sweet Hereafter" and exec produced Sarah Polley's 2007 directorial debut "Away From Her" -- is considering one of several projects based on others' scripts. He also is set to direct "Eh Joe" at New York's Lincoln Center this summer, based on Samuel Beckett's play.
